Japan gets innovative cycle parking

Eco-cycle

Eco-cycle

Japanese construction company, Giken, has introduced Eco-Cycle, a multi tiered storage facility for (what else?) cycles. Capable of keeping 144 cycles at a time in a rotating system and promising retrieval within minutes, this will be a big help for commuters who keep their bikes at train stations. This will reduce the storage space required at the stations compared to traditional bike racks.

Here is a video of the thing working, after the jump:

With many European cities having or starting public rent-a- bike systems (like Velib in Paris), maybe the system has a future across the continent when there will be same parking problem with increasing popularity of Velo and their ilk.

I often wonder if a public bike system has a futurein India? There are so many factors millitating against its success. Bikes are typically looked down upon as poor man’s transport. Even the roads are not safe and separate biking lanes are all but non-existent. Dusts and pollution looms large. And then there is the extreme summer heat and the torrential rains that further make biking impractical for going to office, etc. But maybe a public car renting system has better future? One that comprises of small electric cars?

Great stuff! Just an FYI - the bike system in Paris is called Velib. I could only hope they get something similar!
