Bose has announced that its Energy Efficient Series automotive sound system, making its debut in the 2011 Chevy Volt consumes 50% less energy than conventional systems! As if to confirm that energy efficiency is becoming the latest holy grail of electronics gadgets makers, LG also debuted its LH30FD series of LCD TVs, with 4 phases of power saving modes, that will reduce power consumption of up to 70%.
Bose’s new product is claimed to be 30% smaller and 40% lighter than conventional Bose sound systems but surely, it’s the power sipping nature that fits best with the extended range electric Volt.Though technical details are sparse, tweaks to the switching amplifiers, high motor force speakers, and digital signal processing circuitry may beĀ the black magic behind the efficiency gains.
LG LH30FD series LCDs have been put on sale in S Korea and come in three sizes : 32-inch, 42-inch and 47-inch, with costs from equivalent of $900 to $1800. Again, few details are available about what helps those power consumption figures, but LED backlighting and ambient light sensors could be good guesses.
Although electronic gadgets like TVs and audio systems may be contributing to less than a small fraction of even 1% of greenhouse gases, these products surely point to thinking in the right direction. Every powersaving measure counts and is easier and less expensive than adding new power generation capacities.
