LG outs solar phone competitor to Samsung
Feb 22, 2009 Green Technologies
When Samsung unveiled its Blue Earth, LG could not but get into the game and sure enough, it had its own solar powered phone at the Barcelona Mobile World Congress. Maybe everything was put together in a hurry, so there is no name yet, let alone other details.
What we know though that the phone’s solar power system is embedded onto the battery cover. More specifically, exposing the panel to the sun for ten minutes will give the phone enough power for a three-minute call, making it the perfect companion for emergency situations when no power is available to charge a dead battery. If left in natural light for long periods, the solar panel creates enough standby power to power the phone without any charging devices.
LG plans to release this eco-friendly phone in the European market at the end of this year, wh makes less sense than ZTE’s decision to release its own solar powered phone in Jamaica, where people actually face problem of unreliable power supply. Read the rest of this entry »

LG and Bose go a shade greener
Feb 12, 2009 Green Technologies
Bose has announced that its Energy Efficient Series automotive sound system, making its debut in the 2011 Chevy Volt consumes 50% less energy than conventional systems! As if to confirm that energy efficiency is becoming the latest holy grail of electronics gadgets makers, LG also debuted its LH30FD series of LCD TVs, with 4 phases of power saving modes, that will reduce power consumption of up to 70%.
Bose’s new product is claimed to be 30% smaller and 40% lighter than conventional Bose sound systems but surely, it’s the power sipping nature that fits best with the extended range electric Volt.Though technical details are sparse, tweaks to the switching amplifiers, high motor force speakers, and digital signal processing circuitry may be the black magic behind the efficiency gains.
LG LH30FD series LCDs have been put on sale in S Korea and come in three sizes : 32-inch, 42-inch and 47-inch, with costs from equivalent of $900 to $1800. Again, few details are available about what helps those power consumption figures, but LED backlighting and ambient light sensors could be good guesses. Read the rest of this entry »
